Daedalus Touch – Text Editor for iCloud App Reviews

Missing photos

Excellent with export to iBook (ePub) format. What I really miss is the capability to integrate pictures/illustrations in the text. It feels like being just half way creating stuff on an iPad but without photos... Lets hope for a future enhancement in this area...

Rubbish and lies!

Like a fish out if water. Slowly dying a long, torturous death. Pity - seemed promising.

Does not connect to the OSX app

Not sure whether this is a widespread problem or not, but I have tested this on two computers running Lion and neither one can connect to the iPad app even though I have purchased both apps and connected both to iCloud successfully. I sent a support request and havent gotten a response in over 24 hours. This app is cheap, but the OSX app does not do what they claim it does on all versions.

Best text editor for iPad

I used to think IA Writer was the best text editor ... And then I found Daedalus Touch. This has all the advantages of IA Writer and many other text editors, combined with a great file system. Great balance between focus on the actual writing experience, while also making it easy to manage tons of documents, all synced with dropbox. Hands down, best text editor for iPad.

For a revolutionary app...

...it falls short on the most basic feature: syncing. MobileMe cannot be considered an option now, since it will be discontinued in July. The Dropbox sync is a mess: not only it isnt automatic, it completely messes up the folder structure in my account. I understand that Daedalus wants leave behind the folders metaphor, but this needs to be done right. Two questions: 1. Why not create a Daedalus folder in Dropbox and handle everything from there *automatically*, since the app just import files? That way you could leave the folder structure intact for other apps, and create whatever the app needs to create inside its folder. 2. Why only iCloud backup (meh) and not iCloud *sync*? I would kill to see Daedalus behave like Pages, saving every file automatically to the (i)cloud! I dont want to remember to save the files, thats too 90s and those days are gone. Those are some ugly shortcomings for an otherwise stellar app. The look and feel is superb, the toolbar is the best I ever saw, and the stacks and pages metaphor makes it very comfortable to use. Just fix the syncing, please!

It needs Italic!! :(

Well, first of all, this app is absolutely incredible! Its simplicity is astonishing, and the ability to export as an ePub or whatever else is just too good to be true... But it needs to accept Italic (as the other text formats) :(.. In my current novel I use it a lot to put emphasis into something, or to represent a characters thinking, and I just cant fully work with this app because of this single limitation =.. Please take a look at this! Im sure it can be an issue to many, many writers!

Ehhh

Not a big fan of this icon. A big "D" was simple and beautiful.

New version is not good

As an older user, I have to find an alternative.

With WebDAV Sync!!

This one of the few, and the best writing app with a webDAV syncing option!! Say NO to USA based cloud syncing!!

Nice beta.

I like the stack metaphor a lot and agree with most design decisions (would prefer narrower margins though). However, I have no had three crashes leading to significant data loss each time. The autosave time should be lowered and the crashing needs to be sorted out. Should that be done, I would give it four stars. The offsite storage is good and the interface is nice. With the extended keyboard from Writer and better file management it would be one of my most used apps and go to the full five stars.

Need picture insert

Great app for writing, cant come up with anything I wouldnt like... Except Id love if I could insert pictures in text. Five stars when you get that done :)

Cant say enough good things

Cant say enough good things about this app; the syncing works like a charm, the UI implementation is aces and the everything just has a certain snappyness that makes it a joy to type on. A large problem with blogging on an iPad is that if the CMS doesnt have a proper app, its unlikely youll be able to post on it smoothly. I use Daedalus for its plain text typing, and the awesome sync which allows me to post my articles to a blog from another platform. My only complaint is that there is no bold/italics/text formatting for when I need it, but for the person who uses plain text with HTML tags for blog posts (like me), Daedalus is the best app for the job.

wonderful design but ...

This app is an excellent example of how iOS is allowing a complete re-think of software design. I would love to use it as my main text editor but unfortunately it seems likely to be more one of those strange quirky apps that isnt successful but inspires many other successes in later apps that steal concepts from it. So far I can see two glaring problems that stop me from using this wonderful app. The first is that it integrates with "MobileMe" but MobileMe doesnt exist anymore so one can assume that there basically is no syncing of documents in this app. Even if I assume that the company merely didnt update the moniker and picking "MobileMe" will actually lead to iCloud, it doesnt bode well that this is still not updated after iCloud has been on the market for so long, (neither does the glaring typo on the first page of the manual). this leads me to believe this app is actually "abandonware" and isnt being updated anymore. The second problem is that it doesnt work on an iPhone. Any kind of text editor/reader that isnt a full-blown word processor, needs to be available on all your devices and sync in iCloud. Until this app can do that, its probably a waste of the five dollars, despite how original and beautiful it is. My only hope is that Apple has bought them out which would explain the lack of updating to the program, and that the interesting UI will show up in a future iOS product.

Great feature-set, data-loss & atrocious "syncing"

Lots to like about this app, but its syncing implement (at least to Dropbox) is completely messed up. It doesnt "sync": it downloads all of the files from the folder you choose, deletes the originals from Dropbox, and then uploads them back up. So not only does the syncing process take a really, really long time, it wipes out all of the modified dates of your files. Seriously? There are a lot of really interesting features here, but why the developers decided to implement such a bizarre interpretation of syncing that causes dataloss is beyond me. At any rate, if you value your data (and developers, metadata is still data) Id pass.

Awesome

Write all my school notes in it. Simple and easy. One feature I wish it had though was the ability to cap the length a page can go to.

Unique take on text editors

Rather than doing what most text editors are doing, the developers here went another direction that is perfectly suited for the iPad as opposed to trying to mimic a desktop experience on the iPad. Add to that a built in browser, Dropbox sync, search function and export as PDF or ePub and you end up with an awesome app for writing.

Most intuitive writing app on iPad.

I used to favor iA Writer than anything else on the iPad as my principle writing software. However, I find Daedalus not only more intuitive, with its gesture controls, but also a better overall experience. The built in browser is a big plus especially I tend to use CMOS a lot. The only caveat i that this is not an universal app, and I do use my iPhone to write as well.

Crashes on launch

Updated to v1.5. Declined to use iCloud at initial prompt. Has since crashed at launch every time despite having rebooted iPad twice. A clean install on iPhone works, but updating existing app is a recipe for disaster. Having already setup my syncing for dozens of projects already on the iPad, deleting the app and starting all over again is not something I wanted to do. Also, any documents that were not yet synchronized will be lost if I reinstall; they are effectively lost now anyway. Really, really disappointed.

Problem

Work has not saved since last update.

Now works with Ulysses 3.

Ive already reviewed this and had nothing but praise for it. Which it richly deserved. The developers have now integrated this app with Ulysses 3, their text editor for the Mac (which is a brilliant piece of work.) We now have a complete writing system.
